Yuan ginseng is the same as xuan ginseng, which is an alias of xuan ginseng. Xuan Ginseng has the effects of clearing heat and cooling blood (relieving blood heat by clearing heat), nourishing yin and lowering fire (nourishing yin essence and lowering fire), and detoxifying and dispersing knots. Xuan Shen, slightly cold in nature, sweet, bitter and salty in taste, is used in treating heat in the camp and blood, warm poisonous spots (warm-heat poisonous evils invading the human body resulting in spots and plaques on the skin), heat diseases injuring yin, tongue redness and thirst, constipation due to injury of fluids and constipation, bone vaporization and labor coughing, redness of the eyes, sore throat, diphtheria, scrofula (mainly refers to tuberculosis of lymph nodes of the neck), carbuncle, swelling, sores and poisons, etc. It has been used in many clinical cases. Xuan Shen has many clinical applications, for example, it can be paired with Dan Shen, Lian Qiao, and Sheng Di Huang to improve the symptoms of warm diseases with heat entering the camp, heartburn, thirst, and body heat; and with Mai Dong and Sheng Di Huang to improve the symptoms of heat diseases with yin injury, and constipation with fluid injury. This drug is anti-veratrum, and is contraindicated in those with dampness in the spleen and stomach, and those with loose stools in the spleen (thin, unformed feces). Although Xuan Shen has no obvious toxicity, it should not be used indiscriminately and must be guided by a professional doctor.
