As in previous years, at the end of each year the American Diabetes Association publishes the following year’s diabetes diagnosis and treatment standards, which will be published in the first supplement to Diabetes Care each year. In contrast to previous years, next year’s latest diabetes treatment standards will emphasize the importance of blood pressure management for diabetics, meaning that at every office visit, doctors must measure blood pressure to see if the standard is met. For younger diabetic patients with a longer life expectancy, blood pressure control should be stricter and must be <130/80mmHg or less. Systolic blood pressure can be relaxed to 140mmHg for older patients, but if there are risk factors for stroke (strokes), it is better to control it below 130mmHg. It is important to note that lower blood pressure targets do not add to the cost of treatment and drug side effects for the patient.
