Is a Pap smear the same as a biopsy?

A pap smear is not the same as a biopsy. A cervical scraping, which is a cytologic test, is required for cervical cancer screening. Currently, TCT is usually performed by scraping the surface of the cervix and inside the cervical canal with a brush to obtain exfoliated cells for cytologic examination. Cytology may sometimes be inaccurate, but it is a very effective tool for screening. Biopsy is the use of biopsy forceps in the cervix squamous epithelium and columnar epithelium junction, take tissue for pathological examination, not cytology, but histology, the most accurate pathology, but also the gold standard of diagnosis. If abnormal cells are present or lesions are found when doing a pap smear, a further cervical biopsy should be done to determine the nature of the lesion.
