Is ferritin greater than 300 cancer?

Ferritin greater than 300μg/L is not necessarily cancer. This is because there are many reasons for elevated ferritin, and besides malignant tumors, it can also be caused by excess iron in the body, chronic hepatitis, hemochromatosis, and so on. High ferritin cannot be used as a criterion to determine cancer. It is recommended to carry out other tumor marker tests.

The normal value of serum ferritin is 15~200μg/L, and ferritin greater than 300μg/L is high. It is due to the excess of iron in the body, which may be related to iron supplementation therapy, hemochromatosis, chronic hepatitis, malignant tumors and so on. This is because malignant tumors can lead to hemolytic anemia, which elevates iron within the blood. However, ferritin greater than 300μg/L is not necessarily malignant tumor.

It is recommended that the patient go for tumor marker review again, based on the index of elevated blood ferritin alone, it is impossible to diagnose whether it is a malignant tumor or not. You can carry out the examination of alpha-fetoprotein, serum carcinoembryonic antigen, prostate-specific antigen and other tests to clarify the cause of the disease.
