For lumbar pain with obvious symptoms, especially if it is ineffective after repeated treatment, recurrent lumbar pain, or if there is radiating pain in the lower limbs, x-ray examination should be made in order to clarify the presence of lumbar spine bone lesions, such as lumbar spine osteophytes, lumbar spine tuberculosis or tumors. Because the structure of the lumbar intervertebral disc is different from that of the bone, ordinary x-rays cannot show the lumbar intervertebral disc, but depending on whether the gap between the vertebrae is narrowed, it can help the doctor consider whether there is a lumbar disc herniation in conjunction with the results of the clinical examination. If a plain x-ray shows narrowing of the gap between the lumbar 4 and lumbar 5, further examination is needed to clarify the diagnosis. For example, CT or MRI will be performed according to the area shown on the x-ray.
