Can cystic thyroid nodules heal on their own?

Cystic thyroid nodules do not heal on their own. Most cystic thyroid nodules are usually benign and do not require special treatment, and regular review of the thyroid ultrasound is sufficient. If the thyroid nodules are large enough to produce pressure symptoms, such as compression of the trachea, esophagus and veins, resulting in breath-holding and choking on food, surgery is recommended. Some thyroid nodules that do not have these symptoms but are found to have tracheal compression on x-ray are also recommended for surgery. Some thyroid nodules may become malignant during regular review. Surgery is also recommended for thyroid nodules that are considered to have malignant potential. Most thyroid nodules do not require any treatment as there are no special changes during the follow-up.
