What does anorectal ring mean?

The anorectal ring is an anatomical term for the muscular ring formed by the deep and superficial parts of the external anal sphincter surrounding the longitudinal rectus muscle and internal anal sphincter, and the puborectalis muscle that unites the anal raphe muscles at the anorectal junction, or the anorectal line, which can be palpated during rectal palpation. The anorectal ring is more developed posteriorly and laterally because the puborectalis muscle begins at the pubic pelvic surface and ends posteriorly at the lateral and posterior walls of the anal canal and the caudal anal ligament, forming a u-shaped ring with the corresponding muscle bundles on the opposite side. Therefore, the anterior muscle fibers at the union of the anorectal ring are less, and special attention should be paid during surgery, which can cause anal incontinence if the anorectal ring is accidentally cut.
