OVERVIEW
Overview of Lung Masses
A lung mass is a round-like shadow with a diameter of 3 cm or more and clear margins, and is a common presentation of lung lesions.

Clinical symptoms
Depending on the nature and location of the mass, there may not be any discomfort in the early stage. As the disease progresses, fever, cough, sputum, and chest tightness and shortness of breath may be caused by multiple lung masses.
Hazards
Malignant mass may cause metastasis, obstructive pneumonia, aggravation of infection, dyspnea and so on.
Examination
Chest radiograph, chest CT, PET-CT.
Diagnosis
Lung mass can be diagnosed by the presence of round-like density shadow with a diameter of more than 3cm on chest imaging, and its nature needs to be confirmed by biopsy and puncture.
Treatment principle
Treat the cause of the disease.
Curability
Benign and infectious masses can be cured by symptomatic treatment, but if the patient has autoimmune disease or immunosuppression, it is easy to be repeated and has a poor prognosis; malignant masses can be resected in the early stage and can be cured, but the prognosis is poor in the late stage.
Dietary recommendations
There are no specific requirements for diet.
Important reminders
Physical examination can detect the shadow of the mass in the lung at an early stage.
Etiology
Epidemiology
Prevalent in middle-aged and elderly patients, immunocompromised.
Etiology
May be related to smoking, environmental, occupational exposure, autoimmunity; may also be caused by pulmonary infection.
Symptoms and Diagnosis
Typical symptoms
Early stage of the disease may not have any symptoms, but some patients may have fever, cough, sputum, hemoptysis, dyspnea, chest tightness, shortness of breath, and so on.
Diagnostic basis
Diagnosis can be made on the basis of lung imaging
Treatment
Treatment guidelines
Different treatment for different causes of diagnosis, malignant, surgery in early stage, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, targeted drug therapy in later stage according to the type of pathology.
Drug therapy
Hormone or immunosuppressant therapy for immune-related causes; anti-infective therapy for inflammatory causes.
Radiotherapy
It can be used for the treatment of malignant masses or as an adjunct to surgery to improve the prognosis.
Surgery
Early isolated mass shadow without distant metastasis, surgical resection can be considered.
Prognosis
Lung mass is mostly malignant with poor prognosis.
Nursing care
Daily care
To avoid or reduce dust and smoke inhalation, avoid active and.
Other Attention
Regular physical examination.
