What’s with the watery eyes from riding a bike?

Patients with tearing eyes while cycling may be caused by blocked or narrowed tear ducts, inflammation of the ocular surface, and wind and sand irritation.
1. Lacrimal duct obstruction or stenosis: Lacrimal duct obstruction or stenosis is a common cause of patients’ tearing eyes. With age, the lacrimal duct can be narrowed or blocked due to inflammation, degeneration and other factors, and tears cannot enter the nasolacrimal duct, so the patients can have tearing, and the symptom of tearing can be aggravated by the stimulation of wind and sand when riding a bicycle.
2. Inflammation of the ocular surface: if the patient has chronic conjunctivitis, keratitis and other diseases, under the stimulation of inflammation, the patient may appear photophobia, tearing, conjunctival congestion and other discomforts, and the patient may have tearing when riding a bicycle.
3. Wind and sand stimulation: when the patient is riding a bicycle, if the vehicle speed is relatively fast and the surrounding environment has more wind and sand, the eyes can be stimulated by wind and sand and the performance of tearing.
It is recommended that patients with frequent tearing should consult a doctor in time to assess their condition and follow the doctor’s instructions for treatment.
