Why do nails have vertical lines

The appearance of vertical lines on the nails can be a normal physiological phenomenon or a pathological phenomenon, such as overwork, certain diseases, malnutrition and other phenomena.

1. Normal physiological phenomenon: mainly related to the structure of the nail itself, most people, especially children and the elderly, will appear vertical lines. If the vertical lines are not obvious and more regular, it is generally a physiological phenomenon.

2. Pathological phenomenon: the phenomenon of vertical lines can also be seen when the body is overworked and poorly rested; the body’s poor absorption of vitamins, calcium and other nutrients may also cause vertical lines to appear on the nails.

Certain diseases such as lichen planus, eczema, hypothyroidism, peripheral circulatory disorders and other diseases can lead to the phenomenon of vertical lines. Vertical lines appear on the nails when long-term use of certain chemicals, such as certain pigments, solvents and penetration enhancers in nail polish, damage the nail plate.

It is recommended that those with severe cases should seek prompt medical attention and treatment under the guidance of a doctor, and pay attention to hand hygiene and rest on a daily basis.
