Do ordinary masks work against the new coronavirus?

Regular masks offer some protection against novel coronaviruses, but medical surgical masks, N95-rated masks, are usually recommended.

Ordinary masks refer to sponge masks, cotton gauze masks, and activated charcoal masks. Since the outer layer of these masks is not tough and has no filtering layer, the voids on their surfaces are large, and they are not able to effectively filter the novel coronavirus. Normal people wearing ordinary masks can provide some protection against new coronavirus infection, but the protective effect is small.

It is generally recommended to choose a higher level of protective masks, such as medical surgical masks, N95 grade masks, such masks compared to ordinary masks, can effectively block the new coronavirus. However, the masks are not 100% protective against the new coronavirus, and you should avoid entering high-risk areas and minimize traveling to places where people gather.

In order to prevent novel coronavirus infection, it is necessary to maintain sufficient rest time and do not overwork. If your body is physically capable, you should exercise properly to strengthen your body’s resistance.
