Can acute gastroenteritis heal on its own?

Whether acute gastroenteritis can be cured naturally is a concern for many people. In milder cases of acute gastroenteritis, it can generally heal on its own if diet adjustment and rest are paid attention to. However, patients with moderate or severe cases may be at risk of dehydration, acidosis, and shock due to severe vomiting and diarrhea, resulting in loss of large amounts of fluid, and often require hospital visits for hydration and electrolyte replacement. Patients with fever and chills and other manifestations of infection, if the blood picture suggests a bacterial infection, the milder ones can be treated with oral quinolones as anti-infective agents. If the infection is more severe, intravenous antibiotics may be administered. It should be noted that the use of quinolone antibiotics is strictly prohibited for minors under 18 years of age, and cephalosporin or aminoglycoside antibiotics can be used for anti-infection treatment. If the abdominal pain is severe, drugs to relieve menstrual pain may be given. The most commonly used drug is scopolamine injection. If the diarrhea is severe, Bifidobacterium bifidum capsules and Bacillus licheniformis capsules can be given to regulate intestinal flora, and if necessary, montelukast can be added to antidiarrheal treatment. Patients with acute gastroenteritis must pay attention to rest, drink more water to avoid dehydration, short-term fasting, and gradually transition to a light semi-liquid diet after recovery, in order to facilitate the rest and healing of the stomach and intestines.
