Luteal cysts are a type of ovarian cyst, but ovarian cysts are not exactly the same as corpus luteum cysts, because there are many classifications of ovarian cysts. Ovarian cysts are mainly divided into physiological cysts and pathological cysts. Most of the physiological cysts refer to luteal cysts or follicular cysts, which usually do not require treatment and will subside on their own in about 3-4 weeks. The pathological cysts do not go away on their own and are classified as benign ovarian cysts, junctional ovarian cysts and malignant ovarian cysts. However, if they grow larger than 5 cm, laparoscopic removal of ovarian cysts can be done, while junctional and malignant ovarian cysts require immediate surgery and, if necessary, postoperative radiotherapy.
