What does focal acanthocytic vacuolar degeneration mean?

When a woman has a cervical tissue biopsy and the results of the pathology report suggest focal acanthocytic vacuolar degeneration, it is evidence of HPV high-risk viral infection at the cervix. If the woman is young, she can be given antiviral medications such as interferon and povidone-based suppositories alternatively and be rechecked in 3 months. If a woman is older and still has focal acanthocytic vacuolation after repeated medications, she can also be treated with cervical conization to avoid cervical malignancy. More than 80% of women with HPV infection in the cervix may be eliminated by improving their immune system and giving topical medications. Only a very small percentage of cases will continue to progress and require active symptomatic treatment.
