The dangers of Ling Gui Zhu Gan Tang are unclear at this time. Ling Gui Zhu Gan Tang is from “The Essentials of the Golden Chamber” and consists of Poria, Atractylodes macrocephala, Gui Zhi, and Radix et Rhizoma Glycyrrhizae, which is effective in strengthening the spleen, inducing dampness, and warming yang and resolving phlegm-drinking (warming and activating yang qi within the body to promote the metabolism of water and fluid). This product is mainly used to treat phlegm-drinking (pathological product formed by impaired metabolism of water and fluid) caused by deficiency of yang in the middle Jiao, with symptoms such as dizziness and palpitation (accelerated heartbeat often accompanied by panic), fullness in the chest and ribs, shortness of breath and coughing, white slippery fur on the tongue, and sunken tight or slippery pulse. Together, the four herbs work to strengthen the spleen and diuresis, warming Yang and resolving drinking. The adverse effects of Ling Gui Zhu Gan Tang are not yet clear. This formula should not be used in patients with coughing with sticky phlegm if the drink has turned into heat.
