Is glaucoma common?

Glaucoma is a serious and irreversible blindness-causing eye disease, ranking second in the world in terms of blindness-causing eye diseases. It is estimated that there are 80 million glaucoma patients worldwide, and nearly 10% of them are blind as a result. In China, the prevalence of glaucoma is 0.68%, with a prevalence of 4% to 7% after the age of 50. The most frightening aspect of glaucoma is the insidious nature of the disease and the inability to recover from damage to vision and visual field. Even in the most developed countries, 50% of patients are still unaware that they have glaucoma, and in developing countries this number is estimated to be as high as 90%. Although the damage to the optic nerve in glaucoma is irreversible, the progression of the disease can be controlled and slowed by treatment, allowing patients to retain useful vision for life. The key to achieving this lies in early detection, early treatment and adherence to treatment.
