It usually takes about 7-10 days to recover after bile-intestinal anastomosis. Biliary-intestinal anastomosis is used when there is an obstruction in the lower bile duct or when cancer of the head of the pancreas is compressing the lower bile duct and cannot be completely removed during surgery, so an internal drainage method is used to reduce the yellowing. The bile-intestinal drainage can effectively solve the problem of jaundice because the bile can enter the intestine directly. For the first 3 days after surgery, the patient should be observed for jaundice subsidence and changes in temperature such as fever, possible abdominal pain, and a significant increase in intra-abdominal drainage fluid. After the recovery of intestinal function, it usually takes about 2-3 days for the patient to have some liquid food, or semi-liquid food, such as thin rice and noodles. When the wound is healed early after a week or so after surgery, the sutures can be removed, and the discharge can be considered later. If there is inflammation in the wound or if there is still fluid in the abdominal cavity, the hospital stay may be a little longer.
