How many years can you live on dialysis for uremia?

Generally, patients with uremia can survive 10-20 years or even 30 years after dialysis, which mainly depends on factors such as whether the patients are on regular dialysis and whether they have combined underlying diseases. Uremia belongs to the end stage of chronic renal failure, in which the kidneys cannot effectively excrete harmful substances from the body, nor can they maintain the body’s water-electrolyte balance well. Therefore, once chronic kidney disease enters the uremic phase, dialysis treatment is needed actively. Dialysis treatment can help maintain the body’s water-electrolyte balance effectively, and if patients are in good general condition, their survival time can even be more than 30 years after regular and effective dialysis. If patients have underlying diseases such as diabetes and cerebrovascular diseases, dialysis treatment may accelerate the progression of the disease and the survival time is relatively short, which can be less than 10 years. Patients should eat a low-salt diet during dialysis and pay attention to weight control. In addition, care should be taken to protect the dialysis tubing from folding or infection.
