Depending on the type of surgery, the patient may have a small tube in the abdomen that allows any accumulated fluid to drain out of the abdomen. This is a safety measure and is usually removed a few days after the bariatric surgery is completed. Usually this small tube causes only minor discomfort. Instead, our department is now implementing a philosophy of accelerated recovery surgery, with a series of measures to minimize patient stress and promote recovery, including not placing abdominal drains after surgery. To date, we have performed 80 bariatric/diabetic surgeries without abdominal drains, reducing postoperative pain and increasing patient satisfaction.
