Astragalus has no obvious therapeutic effect on insomnia, pay attention to follow the doctor’s instructions to recognize the evidence. Astragalus is a kind of qi tonic herbal medicine with the effects of tonifying qi and elevating yang (tonifying qi in order to elevate yang qi), inducing diuresis and eliminating swelling (facilitating urination and eliminating oedema), and generating fluids and nourishing blood (replenishing the body’s fluids and blood), supporting toxin and draining pus (draining pus and toxins from the body), astringing sores and regenerating the muscle (helping sores to heal more quickly and promoting the growth of new flesh), and fixing the surface and stopping perspiration (stopping sweating by reinforcing the surface of the muscle). It is commonly used in the treatment of spleen deficiency and qi deficiency, lung qi deficiency, qi deficiency and edema, blood deficiency and atrophy, hemiplegia (inability to move one side of the limb at will) and sores and ulcers that are difficult to ulcerate, etc. However, it cannot treat insomnia and should be taken seriously. Note that astragalus should be taken with caution for those with superficial solidity and evil, those with liver depression and stagnation of qi (poor qi and blood transportation of the liver, emotional depression), those with stagnation of food accumulation (indigestion of food and accumulation in the stomach), and those with yin deficiency and hyperactivity of yang (deficiency of yin fluid and hyperactivity of yang energy). Its adverse effects are not clear. There are many diseases causing insomnia, such as heart-spleen deficiency (weakness of the heart and spleen), heart-kidney disharmony, liver-fire upheaval, and stomach-qi disharmony, and so on. There are differences in TCM treatments for different disorders. It is recommended that insomniacs consult a doctor for diagnosis and treatment, and not to use astragalus or other Chinese herbs indiscriminately. Pay attention to the rationality of diet during the use of traditional Chinese medicine as prescribed by the doctor, avoiding the intake of greasy, cold, spicy and stimulating food or drinking alcohol, in order to avoid affecting the efficacy of traditional Chinese medicine.
