How to tell if a child has norovirus

It is possible to make a preliminary judgment on whether a child is infected with norovirus from the history and symptoms, but a systematic examination at the hospital is required for a final diagnosis.

A child may be infected with norovirus if he/she has recently eaten food with norovirus or has indirect contact with the environment contaminated by the excreta of a patient with norovirus. If a child is infected with norovirus, the most common symptoms are diarrhea and vomiting, followed by nausea, abdominal pain, headache, fever, chills and muscle aches.

However, the above symptoms are not necessarily caused by norovirus, and it is necessary to go to the hospital to receive relevant examinations. Norovirus detection of nucleic acid, norovirus antigen determination is the gold standard for the diagnosis of norovirus. An anal swab or vomit specimen should be taken for norovirus nucleic acid test. If the result of the test is positive, it means that the child is infected with norovirus and needs to receive treatment.

If your child has sudden onset of diarrhea and vomiting, it is important to take your child to the hospital in a timely manner to determine the cause of the illness and get prompt treatment.
