Small white spots in the mouth of infants and young children may be caused by fungal or viral infections or herpes-like mouth sores, and it is recommended to seek medical attention for anti-infective treatment and symptomatic treatment.
1. Fungal infections: when the resistance of infants and young children decreases or oral hygiene is poor, resulting in dysfunction of the oral flora, fungi such as Candida albicans reproduces in large numbers and the above symptoms appear. The doctor should guide the baby to take antifungal drugs (such as mycotoxin tablets, fluconazole, etc.) in order to control the inflammation effectively.
2. Viral infection: Herpes simplex virus can cause herpes, ulcers (i.e. white spots) and fever in infants and young children, etc. Antiviral drugs (e.g. acyclovir, etc.) should be taken under the supervision of a doctor, as well as plenty of fluids and protein supplements.
3. Herpes-like aphthous stomatitis: it is a manifestation of recurrent oral ulcers, which will cause several punctate ulcers (i.e. small white dots) to appear in the mouth; symptomatic treatment is required to reduce inflammation and relieve pain and to promote the healing of the ulcers, e.g. the use of cotrimoxazole gargle and rehabilitation solution as prescribed by the doctor in order to alleviate the related symptoms.
Parents are advised to consult the doctor on behalf of their children, make a clear diagnosis as soon as possible, and then follow the doctor’s instructions for treatment to avoid delaying the condition.
