Painless labor can reduce pain and respiratory depression for the mother, and maintain blood supply for the baby and birth injuries. The advantage to the mother is that it can greatly reduce the pain of labor, reduce the physical strength consumed because of pain, but also increase the uterine blood flow, reduce the probability of water and electrolyte disorders caused by hyperventilation; the disadvantage is that it may inhibit respiration, as well as the possibility of anesthesia toxicity, allergies, prolongation of the labor process, and so on. The good thing for the baby is that after painless maternal pain is weakened, will not lead to excessive secretion of catecholamines, can reduce the probability of fetal hypoxia, help to maintain placental blood flow; the bad thing is that the anesthetic, if the dosage is high, the labor and delivery will be more difficult, need to be assisted, and may lead to the baby’s injuries, such as scalp hematoma and so on. Painless labor should always be done under a doctor’s evaluation, while complete painlessness is not recommended.
