Acupuncture and moxibustion are two different types of Chinese medicine. Acupuncture is the use of acupuncture needles “milli-needle” to pierce the meridians and acupuncture points on the skin of human body to achieve the purpose of treatment; moxibustion is the use of medium-length moxa strips or moxa wool to warm or cauterize the meridians and acupuncture points to achieve the purpose of treatment. In practice, acupuncture and moxibustion are often used in combination, which is customarily called acupuncture therapy. Any treatment method that can be used to cure diseases by needling meridians and acupuncture points on the human body can belong to the scope of acupuncture, such as cupping, electro-acupuncture, acupoint injection, drug ionization, foot therapy, and the more famous three voltaic days of compressing therapy are all acupuncture therapy.
