According to the Chinese Pharmacopoeia, the dosage of Cistanchis is 6~10 g. The dosage of Cistanchis in water should refer to the Chinese Pharmacopoeia, and the clinical dosage should be added or subtracted with reference to the patient’s condition.
Cistanchis is the dried fleshy stem with scaly leaves of Cistanchis or Cistanchis tubiflora in the family of Ledebouriidae. It is sweet, salty and warm in nature. It belongs to the kidney and large intestine meridians. It can tonify kidney yang, benefit essence and blood, moisten the intestine and laxative. It is used in treating deficiency of kidney yang, deficiency of essence and blood, impotence and infertility, lumbar and knee soreness, weakness of muscles and bones, intestinal dryness and constipation.
The effective dose of Cistanchis alone is limited and it is recommended to decoct this product. This product is not suitable for those with solid heat in the intestines and stomach and constipation due to hot constipation. The adverse effects of this product have not been clarified. It should not be taken by those who suffer from yin deficiency (deficiency of yin and essence in the body, resulting in hyperactivity of deficiency fire) and loose stools (thin and unformed feces) and diarrhea.
