Abstract: A 61-year-old patient presented with a swelling in the left inguinal region and was diagnosed with a left inguinal hernia after a physical examination in the outpatient clinic. The main treatment modality for this disease is surgical treatment, which is performed to repair the defective part of the lesion. After it was clear that the patient had no contraindications to surgery, he was given surgical treatment. After surgery, the patient recovered well and was discharged from the hospital with a cure.
Basic information】Male, 61 years old
Disease Type】Left inguinal hernia
Hospital】Jinzhou Central Hospital
Date of consultation】May 2022
Treatment plan】Surgical treatment (tension-free repair of left inguinal hernia)
Treatment Period】5 days in hospital
Effectiveness】Good recovery, cured, discharged from hospital
I. Initial consultation
The patient had undergone surgery for right inguinal hernia six months ago and had recovered well after surgery. The patient was asked to take a standing position and was asked to cough. A mass about the size of an egg yolk was seen in the left inguinal region, and after finger pressure on the deep ring, the mass no longer protruded. In order to further improve the relevant examination and exclude contraindications to surgery, the patient was admitted to the hospital for the next examination.

II. Treatment
After physical examination and preliminary judgment, the patient was given a routine preoperative examination, including routine blood count, electrocardiogram, coagulation function, blood group, and biochemistry, etc. He was explained his condition and elective inguinal hernia tension-free repair was performed, and the patient agreed to the treatment. After screening out the contraindications to surgery, the patient underwent tension-free repair of left inguinal hernia. The surgery took the treatment method of patching, which reduced the tension, reduced the recurrence rate after surgery and improved the patient’s postoperative recovery speed, and the incision was closed by intradermal suture, and the surgery went smoothly.
III. Treatment effect
The patient underwent surgical treatment to repair the left inguinal hernia and reinforced the repair with a patch, which further improved the toughness of the inguinal region and reduced postoperative recurrence. Compared with the traditional hernia repair, it further accelerates the patient’s recovery. Moreover, the incision is closed intradermally with absorbable threads, no stitch removal is required, the surgery is aseptic, no static anti-inflammatory medication is required after the surgery, and the patient recovers well and can leave bed for appropriate activities on the same day after the surgery. Five days after the operation, the patient’s incision did not show infection, bleeding and oozing, and reached the discharge indications and was allowed to be discharged from the hospital for recuperation.
IV. Notes
We are glad that the patient was cured after treatment. However, since the patient was not completely cured at the time of discharge, the following points still need to be noted after discharge.
1. Patients should pay more attention to rest after discharge, and their diet should be gradually changed to normal, and they should not be too hungry or too full.
2. Patients can be more active on a daily basis to promote postoperative recovery, but should pay attention to avoid heavy physical activities for 3 months after surgery.
3. Patients should eat more vegetables and fruits, which can help strengthen nutrition and replenish vitamins and other nutrients as well as avoid constipation and other conditions that may cause increased abdominal pressure and result in recurrence of inguinal hernia.
V. Personal insight
Inguinal hernia is a common disease in general surgery, and after it was clear that there were no contraindications to surgery in this case, surgery was performed as early as possible. Because the hernia has the possibility of entrapment, it may cause necrosis of the hernia contents, blood flow disorders, and even infectious toxic shock, which may endanger the patient’s life. Surgery is the main treatment method for inguinal hernia, and tension-free repair is more commonly used in clinical practice. However, for patients with contraindications to surgical treatment, hernia belts should be worn as much as possible to reduce hernial sac protrusion and occurrence of impaction.
