The colon continues with the cecum in the lower right abdomen, extends upward to the lower edge of the liver as the hepatic flexure of the colon, crosses the abdominal cavity to the left as the transverse colon, reaches the lower edge of the spleen as the splenic area, and then travels downward to the lower left abdomen, where this section of the colon is called the descending colon, and then extends to the pelvic cavity to the rectum, where this section of the colon is called the sigmoid colon. The colon almost wraps around the abdominal cavity, enclosing the small intestine, while the rectum continues in the sigmoid colon and travels through the pelvic cavity, located in front of the sacrum and coccyx, and connects to the anal canal at the lower end, with a length of about 12-15 cm.
