Normally, the lens is suspended from the ciliary body by the suspensory ligament of the lens. An abnormal position of the lens due to various reasons is called lens ectasia. There are various causes for this condition, such as congenital hypoplasia of the suspensory ligament, relaxation and weakness, trauma-induced rupture of the suspensory ligament, and intraocular pathologies such as gravidity, bulls-eye, and dilatation of the eye, which cause mechanical elongation of the suspensory ligament. Intraocular inflammatory conditions such as ciliary tract infections that degenerate the suspensory ligament can lead to lens dislocation or subluxation. Congenital disorders, including Marfan syndrome, are common. Acquired disorders are usually caused by trauma, and treatment for these disorders depends on the symptoms. Some cases where the lens is still clear and has not caused serious complications can be ignored and closely monitored. For lens dislocation that causes complications, early surgical treatment is required.
