Do glaucoma patients need to have their eye pressure checked frequently?

Patient: Dr. Li, do glaucoma patients who usually feel well need to have their eye pressure checked more often? At least how many months between each check-up? Li Mei, Ophthalmology Department, Peking University First Hospital: Many glaucoma patients have little discomfort when their IOP is high, so you should not decide whether you need a checkup and treatment based on your feelings alone. All patients with glaucoma should have regular follow-up examinations. Those with stable disease can be reviewed once every three months to six months, including routine examinations such as IOP and fundus, and some patients should also have their visual fields and other glaucoma-related examinations reviewed once every six months to a year. Patients with unstable disease should follow the doctor’s orders and have their review intervals reduced or even be hospitalized for observation.
