Recipe for Houpu Wenzhong Tang

Houpu Wenzhong Tang is composed of Houpu, Chenpi, Radix et Rhizoma Glycyrrhizae, Poria, Nutmeg, Mullein, Dried Ginger and Ginger. Hau Pu and Wen Zhong Tang has the effects of moving qi, removing fullness, warming the middle and drying dampness. In the formula of Houpu Wenzhong Tang, Houpu dries dampness and eliminates phlegm and removes fullness of qi (enabling qi to move downward to alleviate the discomfort of distension and fullness); Cao Nutmeg warms the middle and disperses cold (dispersing the cold with medicine that warms the spleen and stomach), and dries dampness; Chen Pi and Muxiang move qi and broaden the middle; Gan Jiang and Zing Jiang warm the spleen and the stomach; Poria strengthens the spleen and seeps out dampness; and Licorice harmonizes the various medicines (harmonizing the properties of different Chinese medicines). The combination of all the herbs can help to move Qi, remove fullness, warm the middle and dry dampness. Houpu Wenzhong Tang can be used to treat cold and dampness stagnation in the spleen and stomach, which is characterized by fullness and even pain in the epigastrium (abdomen), dullness (lack of appetite, reduced food intake), tiredness and weakness of the limbs (fatigue), white and greasy fur on the tongue, and sunken and stringy pulse. Adverse effects of Houpu Wenzhong Tang have not been clarified. It is contraindicated in those who are allergic to this formula and should be used under the supervision of a physician.
