Breast milk is the best natural food to meet the infant’s physical and psychological development and has an irreplaceable role in the healthy growth and development of the infant. Many women with epilepsy refuse to breastfeed or stop taking their own medication for fear that antiepileptic drugs will have adverse effects on their infants, causing a series of adverse events. Some studies have shown that the amount of antiepileptic drugs infants receive from breast milk is low, there are essentially no significant adverse effects, and breastfeeding is safe for most mothers taking antiepileptic drugs. Another risk of breastfeeding for women with epilepsy is that the mother may have a seizure while breastfeeding, which may result in injury to the infant, so women with epilepsy should take their medications as prescribed by their doctor while breastfeeding, and it is best to have someone else present while breastfeeding.
