How to read the routine specific gravity of pleural and abdominal fluid

The results of the specific gravity of pleural fluid (fluid that stays in the chest cavity) and ascites routine examination items need to be observed for the degree of abnormality and combined with other indicators to make a comprehensive judgment.

1. Pleural fluid routine

(1) Leaky fluid: transparent, clear and non-coagulable, light yellow in color, specific gravity <1.016~1.018.

(2) Exudate: turbid, specific gravity>1.018. If it is straw-yellow or dark yellow, it may be tuberculous pleural effusion; if it has bad smell, it may be anaerobic infection; if it is chocolate-colored, it may be amoebic liver abscess ruptured into the chest cavity.

2. Ascites routine

(1) Leaky fluid: specific gravity <1.016~1.018, which may be caused by cirrhosis.

(2) Exudate: Specific gravity >1.018; may be due to peritonitis.

If any of the above test results are abnormal, or if you suspect the occurrence of any of the above diseases, it is recommended that you go to the hospital promptly.
