Our academic team recently conducted a study on the TCM symptoms of breast cancer in more than 700 patients. We found that the symptoms of breast cancer can be grouped into three categories; one category is the symptoms of liver meridian: liver qi stagnation, liver heat, blood stasis, liver yang hyperactivity, liver yin deficiency, liver blood deficiency; one category is the symptoms of spleen and stomach: dampness trapping the spleen, damp heat, phlegm obstruction, stomach heat; one category is the symptoms of progressive disease or both: heart fire hyperactivity, phlegm dampness in the lung, wind-damp obstruction, blood deficiency, yang deficiency, qi deficiency. Kidney Yang deficiency, Kidney Yin deficiency, Kidney essence deficiency. Therefore, we can speculate on the pathogenesis of breast cancer as follows: (1) Liver depression and qi stagnation caused by worry and anger, which leads to liver heat and blood stasis; liver qi stagnation crosses the spleen, which leads to phlegm and dampness, resulting in spleen spleen deficiency and phlegm-dampness (damp-heat) trapping the spleen; and liver and kidney yin and yang deficiency due to damage to liver and kidney yin and blood over time. (2) Poor diet leads to the loss of spleen health, which generates phlegm and dampness; in turn, liver qi stagnation occurs when earth is congested and wood is depressed, and liver qi stagnation further develops to form liver heat and blood stasis. (3) When the disease is prolonged, the liver and kidney yin and yang essence and blood are damaged, resulting in liver and kidney yin deficiency or yang deficiency. The above view is also in line with the traditional theory of Chinese medicine. According to traditional Chinese medicine theory, the nipple belongs to the liver and the breast belongs to the stomach. The spleen and the stomach are the epithets of each other. If the liver loses its drainage, the qi becomes fire, the spleen loses its health, and the phlegm becomes internalized, resulting in phlegm-heat, meridian occlusion, and blockage for a long time. According to the book “Surgery”, “Breast cancer is a result of depression due to worries and desires, and the liver and spleen become rebellious, resulting in blockage of the meridians and nuclei.” Through the study of the distribution pattern of breast cancer symptoms, we confirmed that the pathogenesis of breast cancer is based on liver qi stagnation, and phlegm and blood stagnation are the two key factors in the formation of tumor, so the treatment of breast cancer is always based on the basic treatment method of draining liver and relieving depression, adopting the method of activating blood and removing stasis or removing phlegm and dampness, and adjusting the composition of drugs flexibly according to the principle of individualized treatment. Adopting this treatment plan will make the treatment effect of breast cancer much better.
