White peony and white atractylodes are not the same kind of Chinese medicine. White peony is the dried root of Paeonia lactiflora of the buttercup family. It is bitter, sour and slightly cold in nature. It belongs to the liver and spleen meridians. It has the effects of nourishing blood and regulating menstruation (regulating menstrual irregularities caused by blood deficiency), calming the liver and relieving pain, and astringing yin and stopping sweating (astringing yin fluid and reducing sweating). It can be used to treat menstrual irregularities, disintegration (excessive menstrual flow or dribbling), headache, dizziness, and pain in the abdomen and ribs. Note that this product should be taken with caution for those with abdominal pain and diarrhea due to deficiency and cold. It is not suitable to be used with veratrum. Atractylodes macrocephala is the rhizome of Atractylodes macrocephala, family Asteraceae. It is sweet, bitter and warm in nature. It belongs to the spleen and stomach meridian. It has the effect of strengthening the spleen and benefiting qi, drying dampness and diuresis, stopping sweating and stabilizing the fetus. It can be used in the treatment of spleen qi deficiency, qi deficiency and spontaneous sweating (involuntary sweating during the daytime, aggravated by sweating with slight movement), fetal restlessness, and malignant obstruction of pregnancy (in early pregnancy, there is heavy nausea and vomiting, dizziness and anorexia, or even vomiting when food is ingested) and other conditions. Note that this product is not suitable for those who are suffering from heat illnesses that injure the body fluids and those who are suffering from yin deficiency and dryness and thirst. Paeonia lactiflora and Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae are different herbs with different efficacies and should be used under medical supervision.
