When women experience vaginal itching, it is important to determine the exact cause of the itching before administering the right anti-itch treatment. It is not recommended to blindly use medications to stop itching because the medications used can vary greatly for different causes of itching. If the itching is diagnosed to be caused by vulvovaginal dystrophy, it is recommended not to use any lotion to wash it, but to apply skin relief ointment and progesterone ointment locally to the vulva for anti-itch treatment. If the itching is not particularly severe, dextran ointment can be applied. If the vulva itching is caused by vaginal inflammation, vaginal plugs are needed for treatment. If it is caused by mycosis fungoides, clotrimazole suppositories or dacrynic acid suppositories can be used for vaginal topical treatment.
