Autoimmune thyroid disease is mainly chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis, for which there is no specific treatment. Patients with a relatively small thyroid gland and no obvious symptoms of compression can be closely followed up and observed. For patients with a significantly enlarged thyroid gland with symptoms of pressure, levothyroxine tablets can be used for treatment, and the goiter can then slowly shrink. In patients with hypothyroidism, replacement therapy with thyroid hormone is required. After one year of treatment with levothyroxine, thyroid function can be expected to return to normal range in about 1/3 of patients.
