Why diabetes can cause “ED”

ED is the abbreviation of penile erectile dysfunction, which is a kind of male sexual dysfunction. ED refers to the inability of the penis to consistently achieve or maintain a full erection and to have a satisfactory sexual life, often manifesting as weak erection, difficulty in penetration, impotence and premature ejaculation, decreased libido, orgasm and ejaculatory dysfunction. According to foreign reports, in men with diabetes, the incidence of ED is 50-75%, the domestic report is 39.6%, 3-5 times higher than normal, the reason is related to neurovascular damage caused by high blood sugar, this type of ED is also known as diabetic ED. So why do diabetic patients have such a high chance of ED? First of all, we all know that diabetes can cause lesions in the systemic vascular system, including arterial and venous vascular lesions that maintain the erection of the penis, which can cause erectile insecurity; at the same time, vascular lesions can cause disorders of tissue nutrition, autonomic neuropathy caused by diabetes, etc.; in addition, diabetes can affect one or several links in the process of penile erection, for example: interference with the hypothalamus, pituitary gland and testicular For example, it can interfere with the endocrine function of the hypothalamus, pituitary gland and testes, resulting in a sharp decrease in sex hormones; directly inhibit the autonomic innervation of the penis and damage the vascular endothelial cells in the penis
In addition, it can also destroy the role of nitric oxide and other neurotransmitters in promoting penile erection. As a result, sexual excitability is reduced, penile blood flow is reduced, and ED occurs. Diabetic ED has a slow onset and develops over a period of about 6 to 24 months. Patients first experience a loss of libido or weak erections, which, if not treated properly, will eventually lead to a complete inability to get an erection and a lifetime of regret.
