Pregnant women often have elevated bile acids as their pregnancy increases, and elevated bile acids can significantly cause cholestasis. In general, mild elevations of bile acids do not require special treatment. If it causes cholestasis, a small percentage of people will have generalized itching of the skin that requires treatment. If the itching is not too severe, or if there are no symptoms and the total bile acid is simply high, no special treatment is needed. After delivery, the total bile acids of pregnant women can return to the normal range. Therefore, the need for treatment depends on whether the pregnant woman has symptoms or not.
