What should I do if I have severe postpartum hair loss on top of my head?

Postpartum alopecia is a physiological hair loss that occurs by a mechanism related to physiological changes in oestrogen and progesterone and manifests as an increase in diffuse hair loss across the head around 3 months postpartum that is not confined to the top of the head. Postpartum hair loss does not require treatment, so it can be treated by maintaining a happy mood, adequate sleep and balanced nutrition, and it will generally resolve itself and return to normal after 3 months or so.
However, if you experience hair loss that is more limited to the top of the head, especially if you have red patches on the scalp and hair loss, you should be alert to the possibility of other types of hair loss diseases and prompt medical consultation is recommended.
