What causes hair loss on the top of a woman’s head?

A common form of hair loss on the top of the head in women is androgenetic baldness. Androgenetic baldness is a polygenic genetic disorder with varying rates of epiphora. Genetic factors cause the scalp hair follicles to be sensitive to androgens. Androgens act on the sensitive hair follicles, causing them to become progressively smaller, shortening the growth period and producing thinner, smaller and slower growing hair, with localised thinning of the hair. The top of the head is often the earliest area to develop hair loss and the most severe.
Also more common is baldness and, less commonly, scarring alopecia such as flat hair moss can lead to hair loss on the top of the head.
