Pinkeye in infants and children mostly refers to blepharitis, patients may present with redness and swelling of the eyes, patients can be treated with localized hot compresses on the eyes, and can also be treated with medication and surgical procedures as prescribed by the doctor to promote the swelling of the eyelids to subside.
Blepharitis refers to purulent inflammation of the eyelid glands. Under the stimulation of inflammation, children may experience redness, swelling, pain and other discomforts of the eyelids. In the early stage of inflammation, children can apply hot compresses on the eyelids to accelerate local blood circulation and promote the inflammation to subside, but avoid applying hot compresses when the redness and swelling are obvious to avoid the spread of infection.
Children can be treated with antibiotics such as tobramycin ophthalmic ointment to control inflammation and relieve eye discomfort. If the child has an abscess on the eyelid, surgical treatment is possible, such as incision and drainage of the eyelid abscess, to promote the abscess to subside.
It is recommended that children with blepharitis be seen promptly for evaluation of their condition and treatment as prescribed by their doctor.
