We have seen several patients in our recent clinic who developed acne, or worsened acne, after having a facial oil massage. Essential oils have a calming and anti-inflammatory, soothing and moisturizing effect, and promote metabolism and anti-aging. However, there can be serious consequences if not applied properly. These patients all had several to a dozen oil massages on their faces followed by dense whitehead pimples first, with no inflammatory reaction. Over time, the clogged pores were not unclogged in time, and with repeated essential oil infiltration, the follicular corns continued to swell, eventually leading to inflammatory papules, and pustules were generated. In the most serious cases, facial scraping after oil massage aggravates the inflammatory reaction of acne, resulting in a full-blown pustule. Therefore, I advise women who love beauty to be cautious about facial oil massage, and must distinguish their own skin type and situation, not to blindly follow the trend. If a large area of whitehead pimples, consistent in size, or red inflammatory papules pustules occur after massage should be immediately discontinued, and then go to a professional dermatology clinic for consultation, do not blindly deal with. Clinically this type of closed acne is the most problematic and without treatment will eventually form inflammatory lesions. Oral isotretinoin and fruit acid peels are more effective for this condition, but both require at least a three-month course of treatment. Fruit acid peels are most effective for patients with predominantly inflammatory lesions because the skin barrier has been destroyed and the fruit acids penetrate deeper and exfoliate more strongly, so the efficacy is greatly enhanced. Generally, after 2 to 3 treatments, the inflammatory lesions can fade to more than 80%, which gives the patient great confidence, and with scientific post-operative care, better results and fewer side effects can be achieved. Another common cause of large whiteheads is improper use of cosmetics, especially foundations, BB creams, and sunscreens, resulting in clogged pores, which should be discontinued immediately and promptly seen.
