Is thrombocytopenia a serious illness?

Thrombocytopenia may not be serious or it may be a major disease, which needs to be judged according to the primary disease.
Thrombocytopenia is defined as a peripheral blood platelet count of <100×10^9/L. The causes of the disease include three main points: platelet production disorder, excessive destruction or consumption of platelets, and abnormal platelet distribution.
1. Whether thrombocytopenia is a major disease needs to be judged according to the etiology. If thrombocytopenia is caused by viral infections (measles, mumps), folic acid deficiency, use of chloramphenicol and other drugs, it is often not a major disease.
2. Thrombocytopenia caused by aplastic anemia, leukemia, disseminated intravascular coagulation, primary immune thrombocytopenia and other diseases are often serious, difficult to treat, with poor prognosis, and belong to the scope of major diseases.
