There is no basis for the claim of top ten efficacies of Si Shen Wan. Si Shen Wan efficacies are warming kidneys and dispersing cold (warming kidneys and dispersing cold evil), astringing intestines and stopping diarrhea (relieving diarrhea by enhancing the intestinal astringent function). Si Shen Wan belongs to the category of proprietary Chinese medicines and is composed of nutmeg, tonic acid, schizandra, Wu Wei Zi, Wu Zhu and jujube, which have the efficacy of warming the kidneys, dispersing cold evils, and astringing (consolidating) the intestinal tract in order to stop diarrhea. Si Shen Wan can be used for diarrhea caused by deficiency of kidney yang (lack of yang energy in the kidneys), which is characterized by loose discharge in the wee hours of the morning, indigestion with little food, intestinal sounding and bloating, prolonged diarrhea, yellowish coloring of the face and coldness of the limbs. In Si Shen Wan, tonic bone resin is used to tonify the kidney to warm the spleen and earth, which is the main medicine; nutmeg fixes the intestines to stop diarrhea, together with tonic bone resin, the function of fixing astringency and stopping diarrhea is strengthened, so it is the subject of the medicine; Schisandra chinensis astringently stops diarrhea, and Cornu Cervi Pantotrichum warms the spleen and stomach of the middle jiao, which is the adjuvant; jujube tonifies the spleen and nourishes the stomach and nourishes the middle jiao, and ginger warms the spleen and stomach to dissipate the cold, which is the enabler. Adverse effects, contraindications and precautions of Si Shen Wan are not clear. Sishen Wan is recommended to be used under the guidance of a traditional Chinese medicine practitioner, unauthorized use of the drug may cause adverse consequences.
