Does upper gastrointestinal bleeding heal on its own?

Whether upper gastrointestinal bleeding can heal spontaneously depends on its etiology and cannot be generalized. Active consultation with gastroenterology is needed to clarify the cause. If the amount of gastrointestinal bleeding is small, gastric ulcer or gastric mucosal bleeding due to alcohol consumption can be considered, and it can usually heal spontaneously after removing the causative factors and avoiding irritating factors. However, the course of the disease is usually long, such as peptic ulcer, which may take 4-8 weeks to heal spontaneously; patients with acute gastric mucosal lesions recover relatively quickly, and some patients may heal spontaneously in 1-2 days. If the amount of gastrointestinal bleeding is large, it can lead to shock and is usually difficult to heal on its own, so it is recommended to go to a hospital gastroenterology department for regular treatment in a timely manner. In addition, it should be noted that when some patients show intermittent bleeding, it does not mean that the disease has healed on its own, and they should seek medical attention in time to avoid delaying the disease and treatment. Patients should follow medical advice to fast during the bleeding period, and transition from a liquid to semi-liquid diet and then to a normal diet after the bleeding stops. Avoid eating spicy, greasy and irritating foods.
