What should I look for after a pacemaker surgery?

For patients with Parkinson’s disease who undergo “pacemaker” surgery, the feeling of well-being brought about by the test during the surgery is undoubtedly exhilarating, as their trembling hands suddenly return to normal and their stiff limbs become soft, bringing tears to their eyes. 1. Micro-destructive effect After the stimulating electrodes of the pacemaker are implanted in the brain, they will stimulate the surrounding cells and cause local tissue edema, resulting in an effect similar to “destructive surgery”, which will lead to a reduction in Parkinson’s symptoms or even their complete disappearance. Patients and their families should be aware that the symptoms are not a therapeutic effect of the pacemaker, because the pacemaker is not turned on at this time and, of course, no electrical stimulation is released to produce the therapeutic effect. The “micro-destructive effect” will disappear in a few days to a week or so after the operation, and the patient will return to the state before the surgical treatment, which is a very normal phenomenon and there is no need to worry about it. This is very normal and should not be a cause for concern. 2. It is important to note that patients should not take any medication for Parkinson’s disease on the day of the start-up program, so that the programmer can correctly understand the therapeutic effect of electrode stimulation and set the correct treatment parameters. 3, timely program control Within six months after the start of the machine, patients need to be programmed once a month, the program control doctor will adjust the stimulation parameters and the type and amount of drugs taken, so as to achieve the best therapeutic effect. If you encounter sudden situations such as severe movement or sudden aggravation of symptoms, you should go to the hospital as soon as possible to seek the assistance of the programmed doctor. After about six months of adaptation and debugging, after the patient’s symptoms are stabilized, the patient should also return to the hospital for program control on time as agreed with the program-controlled doctor. 4.Drug adjustment After the parameters of the pulse generator are adjusted in the start-up program control, the patient should take the medication according to the type and amount of medication he/she took before, and should not reduce the amount of medication unless there is a serious symptom of abnormal movement. If the abnormal movement is serious, please contact the program control doctor as soon as possible and make medication adjustment according to the doctor’s suggestion. If the patient’s treatment is good, the amount of medication can be gradually reduced after three months, but do not stop the medication suddenly. 5, pay attention to anti-magnetic Similar to most precision electronic instruments such as cardiac pacemakers, brain pacemakers may be affected by strong magnetic fields, leading to sudden shutdown or other malfunctions, so patients should avoid close contact with strong magnetic fields. The main things to pay attention to in life are induction cookers, refrigerator doors, security gates and other places with magnetic fields, and also pay attention not to stay under high voltage lines for a long time. 6. Charge on time If you are using a rechargeable pacemaker, you must pay attention to charging on time. Domestic pacemakers are charged once a week, while imported pacemakers are charged once every 1 to 2 days.
