What is the recurrence rate of otolithiasis

Otolithiasis, or benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, has a recurrence rate of 0-50%.
Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo is a peripheral vestibular disorder characterized by recurrent episodes of transient vertigo and characteristic nystagmus induced by changes in head position. It is often self-limiting and is called “benign vertigo”. It has been observed that 50% of untreated patients recover spontaneously. Some scholars reported that 89% of untreated patients recovered spontaneously after 1 month.
After standardized treatment, the effective rate ranges from 44% to 100%. After multiple treatments, the effective rate accounted for 1/3, and the recurrence rate was 0% to 30%. In long-term follow-up observation, the recurrence rate was 26.8% at 26 months of treatment and 50% at 40 months, i.e., about 15% per year. The treatment efficiency cannot exclude cases of spontaneous remission within.
When suffering from otolithiasis, it is recommended to actively seek medical treatment and follow the doctor’s instructions to standardize the treatment.
