Can you smell your own liver odor?

For those with milder symptoms, you usually can’t smell it on your own, but for those with more severe conditions, you may be able to. Liver odor refers to a foul odor similar to rotten apples, rotten eggs, or fish when the patient exhales or when observing his/her urine. In mild cases, you may not be able to smell the odor yourself, while in severe cases, you may be able to smell it. Liver odor occurs mainly in the severely liver impaired group and is mostly triggered by diseases such as hepatic encephalopathy, hepatitis, cirrhosis in the elderly, fatty liver, and fulminant liver failure. Therefore, timely intervention is recommended when the patient has liver disease or when the liver is chronically impaired due to other factors. Patients who have already developed liver odor should also go to the hospital for treatment in time to avoid delaying the condition, which may lead to aggravation of the disease or even life-threatening.
