Valerian is the root and rhizome of Valeriana officinalis, Valeriana nigra, Valeriana broadleaf, family Scrophulariaceae, with pungent flavor, sweetness, warmth, attributing to the heart and liver meridians. It has the effects of tranquilizing the mind, dispelling wind-dampness, promoting qi and blood circulation, and relieving pain. It is often used in restlessness, palpitation and insomnia, epilepsy, dirty mania, rheumatism and paralysis, epigastric distension, dysmenorrhea, menstrual closure, bruises and injuries. Attention to the weak and yin deficiency should be used with caution.
