What is osteoarthritis of the knee?

Osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee is a chronic joint disease characterized by degeneration and destruction of articular cartilage and osteophytes. The disease is more prevalent after middle age.
The most common clinical symptoms are joint swelling and pain, osteophytes, and limitation of motion. In the early stage, the disease is characterized by joint pain, weakness, and pain, especially when going up and down steps and standing up from squatting. Symptoms are often reduced after rest and aggravated after excessive walking.
There are no geographical or racial differences in the development of osteoarthritis. Age, obesity, inflammation, trauma and genetic factors may be associated with the development of this disease.
